Dentures and Crowns Complete Your Surgical Solution

Dental Implants GainesvilleIf you are in need of dentures, crowns, or bridges, you may be a candidate for dental implants. At our Gainesville, Florida office, we can recommend a surgeon to place your dental implants, and then provide you with the restorations necessary to complete the procedure. Implants are an outstanding means of support for dentures, bridges, and crowns. These titanium posts are surgically implanted in the jaw bone, providing a level of stability that feels like natural tooth roots. This procedure usually requires two separate surgeries, and several months of healing time, but implants can provide you with a lifetime of comfort and confidence. To learn more about dental implants, contact our Gainsville office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Pomeranz.

The Advantages of Implants

Dental implants provide patients with a wealth of benefits. Because conventional dentures simply rest on the gums, held in place with a very mild adhesive gel, they are prone to slippage when speaking or eating. However, dental implants hold your dentures firmly in place, helping you to chew more efficiently, and to enunciate more effectively when speaking.

Traditional crowns and dental bridges rely on existing tooth material for support. This method is effective; however, the teeth serving as anchors are susceptible to decay and other damage. Dental implants, on the other hand, are immune to decay, and due to their strength, only break in very rare instances.

Another important benefit of dental implants is the retention of bone mass in your jaw. When a tooth is lost, the body will begin resorbing bone cells in the area once occupied by tooth roots. Having dental implants in place halts this process, helping you to enjoy the full support capabilities of your jaw. Placing Dental Implants

Before placing dental implants, your surgeon will take X-rays of our jaw to determine the precise area in which to place the implant. The initial surgery begins with a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort during treatment. Next, an incision is made in the gum line, exposing the jaw bone. A pilot hole is drilled into the bone, and the threaded implant is screwed into place. Next, the gum is stitched shut over the top of the implant. Over the next three to six months, the implant will fuse with the bone.

Once this process (called ossointegration) is complete, you will return for a second surgery. This time, an incision will reopen the gums, exposing the top of the implant. A special collar is fitted onto the implant post, which will guide the gums as they heal around the base of the implant, allowing the collar to remain above the gumline. When the gum has once again healed, we can restore the implant with a crown, bridge, or set of dentures.
